SP550 USB Support

Welcome to the SP550 USB Fusion Stick support pages. Here you will find commonly requested files such as game configurations and the latest software, answers to commonly asked questions and step-by-step guides to help you get the most out of your SP550 USB Fusion Stick.

Q1: I did not get a driver disk with my USB SP550 - should I download the drivers from the downloads page?

A1: No. The drivers on the downloads page are for the gameport-connected SP550 and will not function with the USB SP550. The USB SP550 uses generic drivers provided by Windows itself that are installed when you plug it in.

Q2: When I plug my controller in and it detects and runs through the detection process it asks me for my Windows CD. I do not have a Windows CD as it was not supplied with my computer so what do I do?

A2: Some PC manufacturers do not provide a Windows CD with their computer when they ship it to the customer. The actual files that Windows is looking for when you are trying to install a USB stick are called Cab files and these are usually found in a directory on your Windows CD (Win98 if you have Windows 98 or Win9x if you have Windows ME). However, if the manufacturer did not give you a CD then they may have made a backup of these files somewhere on your hard drive. The standard location to place these files is the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs directory or, sometimes, simply the C:\Cabs directory. When the Windows installer for the stick asks you for your Windows CD simply click OK - it will come back to you saying that it can not find a particular file and at the bottom of the window that comes up it will tell you where it is trying to Copy The Files From in a small window. Simply click in this window and delete whatever is in there and try replacing it with one of the above locations. If neither works then you should get in touch with the company who supplied you PC and ask them where your Cab files are kept on your PC.

Q3: I do have a Windows CD but even after I have placed the CD in the drive, Windows still tells me that it can't find the files that it needs when trying to install the pad. Why?

A3: The drivers are on the Windows CD, however Windows has a tendency to not actually look on the CD, even though it asks you to put the CD in the drive. Go back through the install and when it asks you to put the Windows CD in the drive, do so and click OK. It will tell you that it can't find the files it needs, but look at the bottom of that window where it says Copying Files From. It probably says something like C:\Windows\System which shows that it's not even looking on the CD! Change that so that it reads as D:\Win98 (assuming that your CD drive is the letter D and you have Windows 98: if you have Windows ME then it’s D:\Win9x) and then OK it and the pad should install fine.

Q4: My Controller isn't working in my game, why is this?
or

My controller is not performing correctly in my game, what's happening?

A4: The first thing to check if the controller isn't working in the game is whether it is working in Game Controllers/Gaming Options in Control Panel. You can do this following the instructions in the General FAQ. If it is working okay in there then we know the controller is okay and problem has to do with the game itself.

First, make sure that the game actually supports game controllers, because some PC games just don't (if you're unsure you should contact the game publisher for more info on this).

Secondly, make sure you have correctly enabled the controller in the game's control options screen - most games have an options screen where you have to set up the controls - if this is a little unclear to you then the best people to contact this are, again, the publisher of the game as they will be more familiar with the game's inner workings.

Thirdly, the game may well need an update to correct an existing problem that the game may have shipped with. Always check the game's website to see if there are any updates for it (typically called Patches).

Windows 2000/XP

The above problem should not occur under Windows 2000 or XP as both operating systems should load the generic Windows drivers for a USB controller without needing to refer to the Windows CD.
