The controls are mixed up.

Solutions:

Does the game have support for game controllers? Look for a controller/ controls menu, usually under 'controls', 'options' or 'settings' and see if there is a box or list where you can select your controller.
If you can't find a list or box, try assigning the buttons to the actions in the game. Go to the controls list in your game, select a control, 'Fire' for example, then press a button on the controller and see if that gets assigned.
Check the internet for any patches or updates for the game, in case controller support was fixed or added after you bought your game.
How old is your game? If your game is a few years old or more, or even made for windows 98 or windows ME, it is possible the game is too old to work with the controller. The way in which games talked to game controllers changed allot with windows XP onwards, and old games usually can't talk properly with the controllers leading to problems.
If the problem is with one game only, and it doesn't support controllers, you can use the SST Programming software. To the game, it will look like you are using the keyboard, but you will be using your controller!
